FAQ

Biogas plants

Biogas for cooking is one of the most common applications. The fuel from the Biogas plant burns as a clean fuel and has the ability to generate heat for cooking purposes. Every cubic meter of biogas has an average calorific value of about 20 Mega Joules.  This is equivalent to the calorific value of about 0.43Kg of LPG (Liquified petroleum gas). Cooking is one of the most widely used applications of biogas. The gas leaves no residue after it burns which makes it completely usable.

What kind of processing is required for Cooking Purposes

Biogas for cooking needs minimal treatment: Moisture removal through condensate traps or “U-shaped water traps”. Eliminate H₂S - Use iron filings / iron sponge filters to remove sulfur and avoid corrosion and odor

Biogas for clean and sustainable cooking applications
  • Fixed-Dome Biogas Plants
  • Floating-Drum Biogas Plants

Fixed-Dome Biogas Plants

Most commonly in rural setups

Characteristics

  • Underground digester with a fixed masonry dome.
  • Gas pressure varies with the volume of gas produced.
  • Low-cost, long life, minimal maintenance.

Most Suitable for Household/ small community plants

Floating-Drum Biogas Plants

Common household/community plant design in India.

Characteristics

  • Steel or plastic gas-holder drums move up/down.
  • Constant gas pressure.

KVIC (Khadi and Village Industries Commission)

Most suited for Small farms, educational institutions

Advantages of Biogas plant

  • Burns with a clean flame and leaves no residue similar to LPG
  • Zero smoke and hence non hazardous
  • Odorless gas once H2S is removed
  • Economically cheaper compared to LPG or firewood.
  • Reduces possible methane emissions arising from unscientific dumping.
  • Produces slurry which is rich in organic contents and micro nutrients

Yes, when properly installed and maintained. Biogas plants include safety features and operate at low pressure compared to LPG or CNG.

  • Daily feeding of waste
  • Regular slurry removal
  • Periodic cleaning
  • Checking for gas leaks
  • Maintenance is minimal for well-designed plants.

A well-maintained biogas plant can last 15–25 years or more.

Yes. Biogas can significantly reduce or fully replace LPG and firewood for cooking in households and institutions.
